No one surfaced before lunchtime the next day. Em was the first one up, shortly followed by Sue. They met in the kitchen and Em looked up from her coffee cup. “It’s Kevin, you know.”
“I know.” Sue grimaced as she rummaged through cupboards in search of hot chocolate. God knew if Nick had any in stock. Maybe she should go shopping. The fridge looked mightily empty.
“I couldn’t help myself.”
“I know.” She repeated as she spotted a purple tin. “Yes!”
Emma couldn’t help but grin at her friend. “Seems like Nicky stocked all your essentials.”
“What do you mean?”
Emma nodded towards the fridge. “If you look in the freezer, you’ll see there’s a stack of vegetarian dishes.”
“There is?” Sue hurried to it and opened the heavy door. “Wow.”
“Yup, good Nicky.” Emma replied, a grin playing on her face. The grin disappeared however as she realized this was now Sue’s home too. “Why didn’t you tell me you’d married Nick? Heck, why wasn’t I even invited to the wedding?” Don’t I count more than that?”
“Emma… “ Sue turned around and sighed. “No one was invited. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing.”
“Okay, I can accept that. But why didn’t you even tell me you knew him? That you were dating him?”
“I tried telling you-“
“Oh no, not that excuse again!” Emma jumped down from her stool. “I don’t believe this. If you’d really wanted to tell me about it, I’d have listened. You know that. So what are you hiding?”
“Morning girls!” AJ strolled into the kitchen, effectively ruining the moment.
Sue grinned at him, pleased with his interruption. “Hey Alex. How did you sleep?”
“Not bad. Not bad. So what’s up?” He grabbed Emma’s cup and took a sip.
“Hey!” She dove for her coffee but he took a step back and she only landed against the counter with a loud smack. “God damn it! Give it back! It’s my coffee!”
“And now it’s mine” He winked at her.
“Very mature, AJ. Very mature.”
He shrugged, “I need coffee.”
“What about me?”
He exhaled very loudly and handed her back the cup. “Wanna sip?”
“Eww. I don’t think I want to share saliva with you.”
Sue started giggling at that and AJ looked dumbstruck. “Share what?”
“Nevermind, AJ, I’ll make myself a new one.” Emma turned back to the coffee machine.
“What’s so wrong with sharing a cup? I do it all the time.”
“So don’t wanna know that.” Emma muttered under her breath. “And I’m sure you’ve already had a ciggie this morning and no, don’t wanna imagine that one either.”
“Don’t forget about the party last night. We don’t know how or where he ended the night.” Sue pointed out as she waited for the microwave to beep.
“Good point!”
“You guys are nuts.” AJ stared at them both with wide eyes. That made them laugh even more.
“What’s going on?” Nick asked as he strolled into the kitchen. “Hey, baby. I was wondering where you’d gone to.” He smiled as he grabbed Sue’s hand and pulled her forward, making her topple against his chest.
Smiling at the world, she looked up and looped her arms around his neck. “I thought I’d get some breakfast. Want some?”
“Mmm.” He pressed his hips against hers. “Wanna go back upstairs instead? We have nothing planned today after all.”
“TMI, Nick, TMI.” Emma mumbled, turning so she was facing AJ instead.
He was rolling his eyes and she chuckled at the sight. “Let’s go.” AJ grabbed her hand and tugged her out of the room.
“My coffee!”
“Let’s go to Starbucks, babe. We need to leave the two love birds on their own so they can play-“
“Don’t wanna know!”
AJ chuckled, “You know what I mean anyway.”
“Yeah.” Emma sighed, “I know.” Then she realized what he’d just said and started smiling once again. They were going to Starbucks!
